Plus Size Figure Skating Dresses, Made to Your Measurements

Most dresses are made in a size range that was decided before anyone measured you. Ours are not. Every plus size ice skating dress on this site is drafted from your own numbers, in whatever size you are, and the price does not change. No sizing surcharge, no "plus size" line item, no longer wait.

Why we draft, instead of grading a pattern up

A ready-made plus size is almost always a small pattern enlarged by a fixed percentage. That maths works on paper and fails on a body: the armhole deepens in the wrong direction, the waistline climbs higher than it should, the bust dart points at the armpit instead of the apex, and the skirt gets wider without getting deeper. The dress fits the hanger and not the skater.

We do it the slow way. You send eleven numbers - height, weight, girth, bust, underbust, waist, hips, back length, sleeve length, upper arm and skirt length - and the pattern is drafted from those. The waist seam lands on your waist because it is cut to your waist, not to a percentage of someone else's. That is the whole difference, and it is the reason a made-to-measure dress sits properly at a size 6 and at a size 26.

What actually changes on a larger dress

  • Bust and support. Soft cups or an inner support band can be built in at no extra cost, and the bodice is drafted to your underbust so the band sits under the bust instead of across it.
  • Waistline placement. On a graded pattern a larger size sits higher; here it is placed where your natural waist is, which is what makes the torso look long rather than short.
  • Upper arm. The first place a scaled sleeve fails. We measure the arm separately and cut the sleeve to it, so you can raise both arms without the seam pulling.
  • Skirt depth and hem. Panels are calculated for your height, so the hem lands where you want it and the skirt keeps its swing instead of standing out stiffly.
  • Illusion mesh tone. Sheer panels are matched to your skin from a photo - on deeper tones the mesh is chosen slightly warmer so it does not read grey under rink lighting.
  • Crystal placement. Density is planned around the line of the dress, not used to cover it. More is not automatically better on a larger canvas.

Any style, cut in your size

There is no separate plus size range here with three safe shapes in it. Every dress is cut to order, so a large size figure skating dress can be a sleeveless practice dress in black or a fully stoned competition dress — the size does not decide which designs you are allowed. Long sleeve, sleeveless, high neck, open back, lace, velvet, ombre: all of it is drafted on the same table, from the same numbers.

The same applies to what the dress is for. A plus size competition dress, a plus size ice dance dress and a plus size practice dress differ in fabric weight, skirt depth and how much the bodice is boned — not in whether we will make them. Tell us the level you skate at and we will say what that changes.

How to measure, if you have never done it

Measure over the underwear you skate in, keep the tape level, and do not hold your breath - a dress cut from a sucked-in measurement will be uncomfortable for four minutes and unwearable for a programme. The size guide walks through all eleven points; if a number looks wrong to you, send it anyway and tell us, and we will ask before we cut.

If your measurements do not fit neatly into any standard row on any size chart, that is not a problem to solve - it is the exact reason this page exists.

In their own dresses

Customers, in dresses cut to their measurements

Photographed by the skaters themselves after delivery, and shared with us. Names and faces are hidden at their request; the note under each photo is the sizing detail they were happy to give. The numbers differ - a 44 in bust and a 51 in hip on one, a 49 and a 52 on the other - but the process does not: the same measurements decide the pattern, so nothing here was scaled up from a smaller size.

Plus size customer in a custom red figure skating dress with long sleeves, a crystal bodice and a red skirt, cut to her own measurements
5'9" / 245 lb / bust 44, waist 39, hips 51 in. Drafted from those numbers, not from a size chart.
Plus size skater in a custom navy and silver ice skating dress with a halter neckline, a crystal bodice and a grey skirt, cut to her own measurements
5'4" / 250 lb / chest 49, waist 45, hips 52 in. Drafted from those numbers, not from a size chart.
Skater on the ice in a custom lavender figure skating dress with long illusion sleeves, a beaded bodice and an ombre skirt, made to her own measurements
Made to her measurements, not picked from a size chart. The bodice and sleeve were drafted for her, not scaled up from a smaller pattern.

Any style, any size

Every dress on the site can be cut in your size

Nothing in the collection stops at a certain size, and there is no separate plus size line to choose from. You pick the shape - neckline, skirt, crystals - and the pattern is drafted from your measurements, at the price shown.

The measurement box is on each product page, under the size, and there is a note field at checkout. Prefer to measure later? Order first and send the numbers afterwards - nothing is cut until we have them, and we will ask for whatever is missing.

Questions

What plus size customers ask us first

Does a plus size dress cost more?

No. The price on each style is the price, whatever size it is cut in. There is no surcharge for extra fabric, for a larger pattern, or for a dress above a certain measurement. If a style is listed at $229, it is $229 in a size 6 and $229 in a size 26.

Does a larger dress take longer to make?

No. Every dress is cut to order, so a larger one sits in the same queue. Production and delivery stay at 12-35 days worldwide, usually 15-25. If you have a competition date, tell us before ordering and we will confirm whether it can be met.

Is this just a standard pattern made bigger?

No, and that is the point. Ready-to-wear plus sizes are graded up from a small base pattern, which is why the armhole cuts in, the waistline sits too high and the bust dart points somewhere it should not. We draft from your measurements instead: the waist sits where your waist is, the bust dart is placed for your bust, and the armhole is cut for your arm, not scaled by a percentage.

Can you fit a large bust with a smaller waist?

Yes - a large difference between bust, waist and hip is the normal case in made-to-measure, not an exception. The bodice is drafted with a deeper dart and an underbust seam, and we can build in soft cups or a supportive inner band at no extra cost. Tell us your underbust measurement as well as your bust, and we will draft to the difference.

Will the sheer mesh panels match my skin tone?

We stock illusion mesh in several tones - from very light to deep tan - and match it to a photo you send. On darker tones the mesh is chosen slightly warmer than the skin so it does not read grey under rink lighting. If none of our tones is close, we will tell you before you order instead of sending a dress that looks wrong.

What if my measurements change before the competition?

Send us the numbers you have when you order, and message us if they change before we cut. Nothing is cut until we confirm the measurements with you, so there is usually room to adjust. After cutting, small changes are still possible on sleeves, hem length and crystal density.

Can I see the dress on my own body first?

Yes. Upload a photo and we will show the style on you before anything is cut - free, no obligation. It is the fastest way to judge whether a neckline or skirt depth works on your frame, and it is the same tool whether you are a size 4 or a size 24.

Can any style be made in plus size?

Yes - the size does not decide which designs you are allowed. All the dresses on the site are cut to order, so a sleeveless practice dress, a long sleeve lace competition dress or an open back design can all be drafted in your measurements. There is no separate plus size range to pick from.

What is the largest size you make?

There is no top size. A dress is cut from eleven numbers rather than picked from a row on a size chart, so what limits us is proportion, not a size label - and proportion is exactly what drafting solves. A 16, a 22, a 3XL or a 5XL are the same request to us: eleven numbers. Where the difference between bust, waist and hip is large, the bodice gets an underbust seam or an inner support band instead of simply more width.

Do you make plus size competition and ice dance dresses?

Yes. Competition and ice dance styles are drafted the same way as everything else - the difference is in fabric weight, how the bodice is boned and skirt depth, not in whether a larger size is possible. Tell us the level you skate at when you order and we will confirm what that level usually expects from the dress.

Still not sure a style will suit your frame? Try it on your own photo first, or ask us a question — we answer within 12 hours, no obligation.
