How to Choose a Figure Skating Dress

A competition dress, a test dress and a practice dress are three different purchases. This guide walks through what each one actually needs to do, level by level.

Last updated: 28 October 2026

First question: what is the dress for?

"A skating dress" is really three different purchases. A competition dress has to read from the far side of the rink and survive a full programme. A test dress needs to look composed in front of two judges at a table ten metres away. A practice dress needs to survive four sessions a week and a washing line. Deciding which one you are buying settles most of the other decisions.

Competition: the dress has a job to do

Judges score the skating, not the costume โ€” but a costume that reads clearly makes the skating easier to watch. Three things matter more than anything else:

  • Contrast with the ice. Pale blue on white ice disappears; deep colours, or pale colours with strong dark trim, read much further. This is why our blue and black competition designs tend to carry heavier crystal trim.
  • Crystal where the movement is. The audience sees sleeves, neckline and skirt hem moving โ€” that is where crystals earn their place, not scattered flat across the stomach.
  • Nothing that moves on its own. Straps that slide, a skirt that rides up, a back that gapes in a layback โ€” the skater should never think about the dress mid-programme. This is a fit problem, which is why every dress is cut to measurements rather than to a size.

How much crystal is right depends on the level: at juvenile and pre-preliminary, a lighter dress is honestly the better look, and more is not always better. Start from a design in the competition collection and tell us the level โ€” we will say honestly what we would change.

Test day and practice: spend differently

A test dress can be a simpler version of a competition dress โ€” same fit, fewer crystals โ€” and it does double duty for the first few competitions. A practice dress needs stretch, coverage that survives stretches and spirals, and a wash-friendly fabric; crystals are a waste of budget here. Our practice dresses and test day designs are built around exactly that.

Let the music pick the style

The single fastest way to narrow the choice: play the music and write down three words it makes you feel. Dramatic, playful, soft, fierce โ€” then pick the dress that matches those words. A lyrical programme in a fierce red reads as a mismatch even when the skating is good. If you want a second opinion, send the music name with a photo of the design you like โ€” we answer with what we would change, free, within 12 hours.
